Nobody buys a poker table for the cup holders. You start thinking about cup holders the Thursday after somebody's beer went over near the felt, or the Thursday you finally admitted the wells the factory bored into your rail won't take one single thing anybody at the table actually drinks anymore.
Then the question collapses into a hardware question fast — drop-in or slide-under, small or jumbo, 2¾-inch hole saw or 3½ — and that's where hosts get themselves in trouble. The hardware is the easy part and the cheap part. A stainless jumbo drop-in is $6.75 (Casino Supply). A slide-under is $5.99 (Chips and Games). The expensive part is that a hole is permanent and a drink order isn't.
Short answer: if you're still building the table, cutting the rail is a reasonable, cheap, well-documented job — do it at the right stage of the build, on a rail wide enough to take it. If the table is already finished and upholstered, drilling it is real surgery with real ways to ruin it, it locks in a seat map and a single diameter forever, and you should exhaust the reversible options first. Almost nobody regrets waiting a month. Plenty of people regret a hole in the wrong place.
Here's what the decision actually turns on.
Cut a well into a rail and you have permanently specified:
A position. One spot per seat, fixed at the moment of the cut. Not where the drink goes — where the drink has to go, for the life of the table.
A diameter. One size, for eight guys who show up with a longneck, a koozied can, a rocks glass, a 40 oz tumbler, a slim seltzer and a plastic water bottle.
A depth. The part that hangs down below the rail, into the space where knees and chair arms already live.
Only the diameter is really about the drink. The other two are about the table and the people around it, and they're the two that go wrong.
This is the step almost everyone skips, and for a lot of home tables it ends the conversation before it starts.
Builders on Poker Chip Forum converge on 5 inches as the standard rail width for a full-size build — "I actually prefer a 5" rail. The 5" is plenty comfortable without being too big," as one puts it, with 4-inch "low-rider" rails used on portable table toppers (Poker Chip Forum). But the same thread's guidance on holders is blunt: "With cup holders in the rail you will need 6"." A separate build thread puts the floor slightly lower and just as firmly: "A 4" rail is not wide enough for jumbo cup holders. You need a minimum of 5.25" wide" (Poker Chip Forum).
Sit with that for a second, because it's the whole trap in one line. The reason you want to drill is that drinks got bigger — the tumbler, the koozie, the pint glass. The holder that takes a bigger drink needs a wider rail than most home tables have. The motive and the constraint point in opposite directions.
So: tape measure across the padded rim, front to back, before you open a single product page. Under about 5¼ inches and the jumbo option is off the table — which means the only holder you can legally cut for is the small one, which is the size you were already unhappy with.
Say your rail measures wide enough. You order jumbo. Inside diameter 3.5 inches, outside lip 4 inches, depth 2.2 inches (Casino Supply). The tumbler seats. Victory.
Now your buddy's longneck goes in the same hole and rattles around in an inch of empty air. Forum members sizing holders make the same point in reverse — buy both sizes, because "if someone is drinking bottled beer in the jumbo sized ones, it could easily spill" (Poker Chip Forum). A tall bottle standing loose in an oversized 2.2-inch-deep well isn't held; it's parked. First forearm across the rail on a pot drag and it's over, except now it's over into a stainless funnel that pours it straight onto the rail.
The standard-size holder has the mirror problem. A common stainless drop-in measures 2.75 inches inside and 2.26 inches tall (Chips and Games), and the small holders can run tighter still — one host retrofitting a factory table measured 2⅝ inches inside rather than 2¾, which is why he reported flatly that "a pint glass does not fully fit in the cupholder" (Poker Chip Forum).
There is no diameter that solves a ten-person table. You are picking which half of your regulars gets the bad fit, and then you're picking it permanently. That is the single strongest argument against cutting, and it has nothing to do with woodworking.
If your table is still in pieces, in-rail holders are genuinely easy, and the correct sequence is well documented. The support rings go in first: "The Rings should be glued in place on the rail plywood and the foam cut around it PRIOR to installing the vinyl," as one builder puts it — glue the ring to the rail, then "cut the foam around the inner diameter of the ring and stretch it around the outer diameter of the ring, then wrap the vinyl" (Poker Chip Forum). Only then do you open the vinyl over each ring. The cut is not an X; it's "more of an 8-slit star vs just an X," made about "3/16s from the inside rim of the cup holder hole" so the vinyl has enough material to stretch down inside and stay put. On a raised rail, one builder skipped the rings entirely and dropped the hole-saw cutout puck back into the hole instead, so the holder's lip rests on something solid and the foam can't compress at that spot over the years (Poker Chip Forum).
Miss that order and the ring becomes joinery through a finished surface. One member whose rails were already upholstered had to cut his rings into three pieces, feed them in from the bottom and c-clamp them with "Titebond Quick & Thick Multi-Surface Glue" to get them seated at all.
Twenty minutes of work, done in the right order, on a rail you can rebuild for the price of plywood, foam, vinyl and a box of staples.
A finished table is the same job run backwards, through the finished side, and that's a different animal entirely.
Hosts do successfully upsize the holders in a factory table. Here's what they report having to deal with, and it's worth reading before you borrow a hole saw.
The vinyl is the fragile part, not the wood. You slit the vinyl first — four cuts, small, before the saw ever touches it — because a hole saw can grab an unslit vinyl skin and wind it up. General upholstery practice says the same thing: make the slits as small as you can get the saw through, because you can always enlarge a cut and you can never un-enlarge one (iboats forum).
The factory holders are glued in. Retrofitters use a heat gun to release the originals before doing anything else.
You can't reuse the original holes. The new, bigger well has to move inward — the one retrofitter who worked out the offset was going from memory, "I don't remember the measurements, but think it was 2 inches from the edge of old cup holder indent" — or the enlarged cut runs out through the edge of the rail.
On a lit table, there's a wire and a light channel under there. One host's report, verbatim: he "went too close to the rail on one of the holes and ruined part of the light."
Slow down when the saw reaches the wood or the particle board splinters out under the vinyl where you can't fix it.
All of that is from hosts who did it and would do it again (Poker Chip Forum). Note the useful detail buried in their method: most of them don't glue the new holders in at all. The hole is cut to size and the holder is held by friction, shimmed with painter's tape, foam weather stripping or velcro if it's loose — deliberately kept removable. Even the guys who cut holes don't want the hardware permanent.
The sellers agree, in their own careful way. Casino Supply's instruction on its jumbo drop-in listing is one sentence: "We recommend you wait until you receive the cup before drilling your mounting holes." When the seller tells you not to trust the published diameter until the part is in your hand, that's the sound of a lot of returned e-mails.
One more from the retrofit threads, filed under things you learn too late: budget aluminum holders arrived with "a jagged edge that WILL slice you," and got replaced with stainless (Poker Chip Forum). It's a rail. Elbows and forearms live on it all night.
Drop-ins run roughly 2.2 to 2.3 inches tall — the Casino Supply jumbo is 2.2, no deeper than a standard — but other jumbo styles do run deeper, and the ones that defeated one Barrington owner were of the sort described on the forum as four inches wide and three inches deep. That body has to go somewhere, and where it goes is under the rail — into knee space, into chair-arm space, and on a folding table, into the space the table needs to fold through.
Retrofitters flag all three: deep holders "risk hitting knees or chair armrests," which creates its own spill hazard when somebody stands up fast, and on a folding table they "may prevent tables from closing properly" (Poker Chip Forum). One host's install ran the saw straight into the tubular steel leg frame and needed a sawzall to clear the interference.
If your table folds and lives in a closet between games, measure the fold clearance before you cut. A permanent well that stops your table from closing is a very expensive way to hold a can.
The anti-drilling case is easy to overstate, so here's the other side straight from people who did it and are happy.
The core argument is geometric and it's a good one: a well in the rail puts the drink directly in front of the player, outboard of the felt, and behind the working zone of everyone else's arms. One host's report, with holders in the rail in front of players on both his tables: the drink "is out of the way of elbows, and it's out of the way when you're dealing cards," and in "8 years we've only had a few close calls (mostly from a few fairly intoxicated folks) but zero spills." He adds the placement that makes it work — "you position them so you 'belly up' to the cup," square behind your own holder rather than drifting sideways (Poker Chip Forum).
The second argument: it's what the rooms do. "The vast majority of casinos I've played in have them in the rail," and hosts who've tried the alternatives push back hard on side tables and carts — "turning around every time I want a sip of whiskey is distracting." Though that same thread is full of drink-cart partisans too — "side trays are, without a doubt, the best for the poker and the table."
Third: an unused holder costs nothing. "You can always choose not to use it."
If your table is a fixed 10-seat build that lives in a dedicated card room, has a 6-inch rail, always runs the same number of players, and you're building it yourself — cut the holes. That's the configuration in-rail holders were designed for, and the people who have it are satisfied.
The objections aren't about spills. They're about the fact that a hole is a permanent decision applied to a table that changes every week.
Holes are a seat map cast in stainless. The most-repeated complaint is the loss of flexibility — "I don't like cup holders in the rail mainly because there isn't an option to move them," against the alternative where "you're not married to a particular space at table. 10-handed, fine... 9-handed, no problem, 8-handed, lotsa room" (Poker Chip Forum). Your Thursday game is ten-handed twice a year and seven-handed most weeks. The seats spread out. The holes don't.
Elbow room is a real cost, not a rounding error. "It's always in the way." Another, on corner placements: "my elbows and the drinks want to occupy the same space at the same time." This is the mechanism behind the spill pattern every host recognizes — the drink that goes over is almost never the one in the holder. It's the one parked on the rail beside it, because the holder was in the way of the player's forearm and he moved it.
It's one diameter forever, per the jumbo paradox above.
And the tell: the host who started one of those threads, having read every argument on both sides, closed it with three words. "Order placed. No cup holders."
The obvious middle path is the casino-style slide-under — a steel tongue that slides into the gap between the rail and the playing surface, holding a cup outboard, no drilling, movable seat to seat. Around $5.99 each, 2.7 inches inside, 2.28 inches tall, with a 2.25-inch-wide slide tongue (Chips and Games).
It's a good answer for the right table. Three things the listing won't tell you:
Your table needs a gap. Slide-unders need a real rail-to-surface gap, which is exactly what mass-market tables don't have. One owner shopping for his Barrington hit the product description's plain warning — "Will not work with most factory tables" — and backed off on the strength of it (Poker Chip Forum).
Raised or lighted rail eliminates them outright. From a moderator on the topic: "there's no way to do a slide under cup holder with a lighted/raised rail" (Poker Chip Forum). If you bought the LED table, this whole option is closed.
The underside may need work before it touches your cloth. The common complaint is manufacturing, not design: a host who ordered and returned two sets from Amazon found them all the same, "super sharp tack welds or rivets on the bottom that I'm afraid will tear the playing surface," and another owner confirmed "I've had to grind down the welds on all of mine." It isn't universal — an owner running stainless slide-unders on his own table answered "None so far" when asked whether the tongue was scratching his felt. Acrylic comes up as the safer bet for anyone who doesn't want to take a file to a new part before its first game: "Acrylic is all I've ever used at both casinos and in home games."
And the operational one everybody discovers on their own: a slide-under sits on the surface at the edge of the felt, in the lane a dealer pitches cards through thirty-plus times an hour, and in the sightline to the short stack's chips across the table.
There's a fourth category worth knowing exists, because it's where hosts land after rejecting all three of the above: cup holders built into the table's architecture rather than into the rail. One builder routed a slot around the perimeter of a 58-inch round table and set neodymium magnets under the surface, so a holder slides in wherever a player wants it — left, right or centre — is held solidly by the magnets, sits off the table surface to stay out of the way, and lifts out entirely when nobody wants one; the same slot takes standard holders, jumbos, a phone shelf or a wireless charger (Poker Chip Forum).
These solve the seat-map problem properly and they look terrific. They are also table design decisions, not accessory purchases, and they cost accordingly — a 38-vote thread on quick-release removable mounts had the winning $52-per-seat option at 57.9%, with 23.7% of voters saying both options on offer were simply too expensive (Poker Chip Forum). Multiply by nine seats. Note also that those mounts hang about ⅞ of an inch below the table bottom, so the knee-clearance question comes back around.
If you're building, look at these before you look at a hole saw. If you already own a finished table, they're not really available to you.
Here's the frame that actually decides it, and it isn't about drinks at all.

Same cut, completely different downside. A builder is spending a Saturday. An owner is betting the whole table on a $6.75 part.
If steps 1 through 5 don't all come back clean, the honest answer is that your table isn't a candidate for drilling — and that's not a failure of the table. It's a table that was built for arms and cards, and it's doing that job.
There's a fourth answer that gets skipped because it isn't hardware in the table: stop trying to make the table hold the drink, and make the drink hold the table.
Every poker room has hard, flat, dry surfaces that aren't the felt and aren't the padded rail — the wooden racetrack ring if your table has one, the exposed margin of the dining table around a topper or mat, the vinyl top of a folding table, the side table you dragged over. Those surfaces are fine surfaces. Their problem isn't the surface. It's that a longneck, a Solo cup and a half-empty water bottle are all narrow at the bottom and tall above it, so a nudge that would never move a rocks glass puts them straight over.
That's what a Steadi base is for. The reason it belongs in a drilling article is the ledger above. It's a thing you set on the table and take off the table. Cut if you're building the table, your rail is 5¼ inches or wider (6 if you take the more conservative advice in the same threads), your game runs a consistent seat count, and you've picked the diameter with your regulars' actual drinks standing in front of you. Do it in the right order: rings glued to the plywood, foam cut around them, vinyl over the top, 8-slit star last.
Don't cut if the table is finished, folds, is lit, has a rail under about 5 inches, or if your seat count swings week to week. The cut is one-way, the well is one size, and the spill you're trying to prevent is usually the drink sitting beside the holder anyway.
In between, do the cheap reversible things first — a movable base under the drink, a slide-under if your table actually has the gap for it, and the one house rule that costs nothing: whatever the drink is, it lives outboard of the felt. Then decide in a month. The hole saw is patient. The felt isn't.
